Central Thailand (central plain) is a region of 22 provinces covering the broad alluvial plain of the Chao Phraya River. It is separated from Northeast of Thailand by the Phetchabun Mountains. The area was the heartland of the Ayutthaya Kingdom and is still the dominant region of Thailand. On most maps, Central Thailand contains the Thai capital of Bangkok and is the most populated region in the country. However as Bangkok is very distinct in its values and culture, it is easier to separate Bangkok and adjoining provinces into its own region.
